Leaving no one behind: a look at Textio's day of service

This summer, many Textios volunteered their time during our annual day of service. Not only is this a great way for the whole company to slow down and take inventory of how else we can contribute to our community, but it’s also a great way to connect with each other.

Projects included everything from gardening work to transcribing historical documents. One of Textio's biggest events organized this year was at Magnuson Park P-Patch in Seattle, WA. Volunteers (and one dog) weeded, fought off wasps, and beautified the garden. Others volunteered at organizations like Growing Gardens in Boulder, CO, and local Seattle gems like the Maple Valley Historical Museum, and the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) Food Bank

Some Textios even ventured beyond structured events, instead opting to step outside their front door and pick up local sidewalks, heavily trafficked trails, schools, and more. One group collected 30 pounds of trash in the greater Seattle area! For Textios who opted to volunteer from home, many transcribed documents for organizations like the Smithsonian and Zooniverse, or offered their professional expertise to organizations like xbot robotics. This day of service brought out our team’s creativity and fun spirit all while putting our effort into great organizations that are making an impact.

Textio not only encourages volunteering, but also sets aside multiple paid days a year plus additional support, which takes the company's engagement to the next level when it comes to investment in our local communities. This means a great deal to me personally as I believe that it is all of our responsibility to connect to and support our communities.

One of Textio’s company principles is Leave No One Behind. In the space of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, this is part of taking the work to heart. It’s easy to intend to do that, but it can be harder to actually do it in practice. This principle relates to our internal operations at Textio, but also how we show up in the context of the Tech industry and our local communities.

In the world of Tech benefits, it’s easy to get swept away in the “perks” mindset. And Textio does have a lot of awesome perks! But to more completely embrace our values, we also have benefits that directly relate to the practice of leaving no one behind. We offer benefits and programs centered around this principle, including our annual day of service. Textios can also take up to three work days off to volunteer during work hours. And, when employees max out their volunteer hours, Textio donates $500 to the organization they volunteered for.
