What to know about the 2022 talent landscape

Candidates are leading with values and looking for empathetic employers
Graphic of hilly landscape with four human figures evenly dispersed among the hills

The past two years have shaken up the talent marketplace. In a global pandemic mixed with mass layoffs, rampant racism, police brutality, climate disasters, political turmoil, and more, people are never going back to “normal.” Employees and candidates are looking for a sense of safety—not just physically, but also psychologically. They’re also looking for a sense of freedom: to be themselves, fully, especially now that more folks are working from home and have no choice but to give their coworkers a peek into their homes and lives.

Today, talent is leading with their values, leaving roles that aren’t aligned, and looking for empathetic employers. In a survey on wants and expectations post-pandemic, 59% of workers said a flexible work environment is more desirable than health insurance or paid time off. Separately, 59% of people leaving their job said it’s because they want a role that fits better with their values.

The tables have turned. Candidates, especially those from underrepresented groups, have long been expected to prove that they belong. Now, candidates are asking companies to prove it—to prove that theirs is a worthy, welcoming workplace. And talent today has many options. As the economy recovers, hiring is spiking at the same time people are resigning. Choosy candidates have their pick.

2022 is a competitive talent landscape in which reputation and company culture prevail. It’s a labor-forward market, and job seekers are looking for employers with human-centered values:

  • 84% of job seekers say the reputation of a company as an employer is important.
  • 50% of candidates say they wouldn’t work for a company with a bad reputation—even for a pay increase.

Likely, you’re reading this because you care about recruiting inclusively and building a safe and welcoming culture—and today’s candidates expect you to care. Take a look at your employer brand content and make sure they know you do!
